Innovation Internship
This interview invites you along Caroline Klinteby Szarka's journey as Innovation & Tech Associate at Innovation Centre Denmark. Caroline studies Digital Innovation & Management at IT University of Copenhagen.
Why did you pursue an internship at the Denmark in Silicon Valley mission?
I decided to do an internship at Innovation Centre Denmark due to my interest in emerging technologies, the digitization of businesses, and digital innovation. I believed that Silicon Valley would serve as an ideal environment to delve into these areas. Additionally, I sought to gain practical work experience that would be directly applicable before completing my graduation.
On a personal note, I aimed to challenge myself by relocating to the opposite side of the globe, seeking experiences that were not readily available in Denmark. This included the opportunity to explore the Californian landscapes, particularly exploring the numerous national parks such as Yosemite.
What's been your most significant professional learnings gained from being here?
The primary takeaway from my professional experience has been the crucial importance of networking. In my view, a substantial portion of the events and projects undertaken at the Innovation Centre Denmark thrives on effective networking. As I return to Denmark, I recognize that networking is an essential component of my future career, and I am committed to prioritizing it.
Moreover, the Silicon Valley culture's embrace of failure as a pathway to success has influenced me to adopt a more entrepreneurial mindset. I am now inclined to pursue ambitious and innovative projects, approaching complex problems with a willingness to explore unconventional solutions. This cultural shift in my approach will undoubtedly shape my future paths in the professional landscape.
How has your internship experience in Silicon Valley influenced your future career goals?
I wouldn't say that the internship directly altered my future career goals. I have always been certain about my desire to work in the consulting and tech area. However, the internship has strengthened my conviction and confidence in pursuing these career goals.
How would you describe your personal growth during your internship in Silicon Valley?
Primarily, the internship provided me with the opportunity to live in a foreign country, adapt to different cultures and norms, and gain insights into the American work environment and networking practices. Additionally, the experience of living in a foreign country and commencing a new job alongside six other interns who shared similar emotions, particularly in the initial stages, has been invaluable. In general, residing and spending a lot of time with other interns, whom you haven't met beforehand imparts valuable lessons.
How has it been living in and experiencing California?
In my opinion, California stands out as the most appealing place to reside in the US. The abundance of nature and breathtaking landscapes sets it apart from other regions. Additionally, San Francisco offers a wealth of entertainment options, including sports games, bars, and restaurants. Exploring the city is a good experience. During weekends, it's convenient to drive to numerous scenic locations for hiking, with Lake Tahoe and Yosemite being among my favourite destinations. Moreover, I appreciate San Francisco's proximity to other attractive places like Mexico and Hawaii, significantly reducing travel distances to these desirable locations.
